Political Maps Will Change as Rizieq Shihab Returns: Observer

11 November 2020 16:03 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPolitical observer from Al Azhar Indonesia University (UAI), Ujang Komarudin, opined that the country’s politics would become more dynamic in the future following the return of Rizieq Shihab.

“Well, admitted or not, HRS (Habib Rizieq Shihab) is a symbol of people’s resistance to the government. HRS is a figure who is brave to face the government so that he was exiled to Saudi Arabia,” Ujang told Tempo on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

Rizieq returned to Indonesia on Tuesday, November 10, after living in Saudi Arabia for more than three years. He was greeted by thousands of supporters who crowded Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang upon arrival.

Ujang argued that once the leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) comes back home, Indonesia's political map would change. Moreover, if Rizieq joins hands with other non-parliamentary opposition parties.

“Then the people's opposition power will be strong and major. Because at the same time, many are disappointed with the government,” he added.

Ujang observed that Rizieq’s great name was attributable to his attitude that did not take partisanship. Rizieq also did not show himself taking sides with a particular party. Thus, Ujang assessed that the FPI leader has a huge chance of becoming a strong opposition to the government.

Even while staying in Saudi Arabia, Ujang went on, Rizieq Shihab frequently criticized President Jokowi's administration and claimed the government prevented him from returning home.
