Textile Association Hopes to Maintain US Market in Joe Biden's Future Govt

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Textile Association (API) secretary general, Rizal Rakhman, is anticipating the possibility that ties between the US and China could be mended following Joe Biden’s win in the United States election. 

His concern was expressed due to the fact that the China - US trade war had benefited Indonesian textile industry orienting on exports as local textile producers are able to fill the gap made vacant by Chinese products in the US market. 

“We hope that Indonesian-made textile products will continue to be able to have a strategic position in Biden’s eyes. We hope our market share in the United States market will not be replaced by China,” said Rizal to Bisnis.com on Monday, November 9.

According to API’s records, the market share of Indonesian textile and derivative products (TPT) in the US was 4 percent in 2019 and 2 percent in the global market. 

Rizal also said that the textile demands from the United States contribute to 35-40 percent of the total national export on TPT, which he sees as an important market share needing to be sustained and encouraged the Indonesian government to establish a new diplomatic relation with Joe Biden’s future administration to preserve Indonesia’s exports to the US.
