TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police spokesperson Sr. Commissioner Yusri Yunus reacted to the incident that saw members of the Islam Youth Movement (GPI) purchase products from French companies in large quantities to be burned. The act was a form of protest against the statement made by French President Emmanuel Macron right after a vile terror attack in France.
“We call for them not to cause public disorder,” said Yusri at the Metro Jaya Police headquarters in South Jakarta on November 5.
The police spokesperson also used the moment to clarify that the French products were purchased and not forcefully taken from a minimarket before it was burned. However, Yusri said police personnel will be mobilized to guard a number of locations following this incident.
GPI members on Tuesday visited a minimarket in the area of Menteng, Central Jakarta, to purchase products that are made by French corporations, and then burn them. Police said they were not able to do much in preventing such incidents from happening as their actions did not violate criminal code.
