Palace Denies Job Creation Law Creates Lifetime Contract for Workers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government denies that the widely controversial Law No.11/2020 on Job Creation will accommodate corporates to keep non-permanent workers on a contractual status forever, or--as the locals said--contract for life.
The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Deputy III key expert, Fajar Dwi Wisnuwardhani, said that the time span of the fixed-term work agreement (PKWT) is being regulated by the government and will be introduced in an upcoming government regulation (PP).
“Who says the PKWT will last a lifetime for a worker? It will still have a limit and will be determined by a PP,” said Fajar in a written statement on Wednesday, November 4.
The written law initially contained in the omnibus job creation law was one of the many aspects of the law that labor workers find troubling. Indonesian Worker Union Confederation (KSPI) president Said Iqbal claimed the Job Creation law erases the contract expiration period that is contained in Article 59 of Law No.13/2003.
The workers union president feared this timeless work contract will cause employers to constantly extend the contracts of the non-permanent workers without a time limit and avoid promoting a worker as a permanent employee.
