TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated that the maximum drainage capacity in the capital city is only 100 millimeters of rainfall per day. If the rainfall intensity exceeds the number, Jakarta will be flooded.
“As occurred at the beginning of this year, in January, the rainfall intensity was 377 millimeters per day or 3.7 times above the capacity,” said Anies in a ceremony on the preparation for the rainy season at the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) 2, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, Wednesday, November 4, 2020.
If the rainfall intensity surpasses the drainage capacity, he said two responsibilities must be carried out. First, ensure that all residents are safe. “Second, the inundation must be receded in less than six hours,” he added.
He reported that Jakarta is facing three challenges in the rainy season. They are local rain in the city, heavy rain in mountain areas where the precipitation flows down to the city, and rising seawater in lower land areas or rob flood.
Anies Baswedan also touched on the La Nina weather phenomenon that could increase the rainfall intensity. He added that the city administration prepared special equipment for this year’s flood mitigation in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, such as special camping tents for flood victims.
