Central Jakarta to Convert Vacant Lands into Urban Farming

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta city administration planned to convert vacant lands into urban farming. Deputy Mayor Irwandi said this program will support public food security, especially in times of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Vacant lands and assets of Central Jakarta are better used. We have one model of that in Cempaka Putih, which the asset belongs to the city’s parks and urban forestry. We use the land to grow hydroponics,” said Irwandi at his office, Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
Vegetables or plants on the government’s urban agricultural lands could be harvested in a maximum of two weeks and benefitted by residents in the area.
“Other than preventing the land from being misused by irresponsible people, let us manage it and the crops can be used by residents,” added Irwandi, who is a former head of Jakarta micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Head of the Central Jakarta Asset Agency, Sofian Gani, supported the urban farming program and said his side would re-record assets of vacant lands that could be used as urban agricultural lands for the benefit of the people in Central Jakarta.
