Academic Alliance Fears Job Creation Law Only Bolsters Capitalism

3 November 2020 22:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of academicians joined in the Alliance of Academics have officially filed a request to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo asking to revoke Law No.11/2020 on Job Creation passed by the president earlier today.

The alliance opined there were too many problematic aspects in the law’s substance and the process of its creation, which they argue only strengthened the notion that the omnibus law does not side with Indonesia’s majority.

One of the members of the alliance, Haris Retno, viewed that the formulation and passing of the Job Creation had violated the values of living in a state which should aim to improve the welfare of its people, enrich the life of the nation, and build the essential foundation of democracy.

“However, the principle [currently upheld] seems to side with capitalism and oligarchs, which diverts it further from human values and social justice. The president should be wiser than this instead of passing a Law that is rejected by a large portion of its own people,” said Retno in Tuesday’s press conference, Nov. 3.

She said as many as 322 academics from 119 universities across Indonesia have joined the stand taken by the alliance upon pressuring President Jokowi to revoke the Job Creation law.
