Police Reveal Reasons Behind Rampant Robberies Against Cyclists

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Metro Jaya Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said carrying luxury items such as cell phones and bags was among the reasons behind the rampant robberies against cyclists in the capital. Yusri added cyclists often kept their cell phones in plain sight.

“They keep their handphones at the front [of the bicycle], and there are also those who place them in their back pocket,” said Yunus on Monday, November 2. “They also tie their bags carelessly. We keep on reminding cyclists to be safe.”

He also said the hours cyclists would often choose to roam the streets, which were in the early hours of dawn, were also among the factors that made them a target.

Thus, he advised cyclists to ride in groups to avoid being targeted by robbers.

Up until October 2020, the Metro Jaya Police received 14 reports related to robberies against cyclists. Yusri believed the actual number of victims was higher than reported.
