Gunungkidul SAR Team Warns Tourists Against Dangerous Rip Current

30 October 2020 19:52 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta A video showing two tourists who jumped off a cliff in Ngandong Beach, Tepus, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta went viral on social media on Friday, October 30.

Fortunately, the two men who reportedly hailed from Central Java survived after striving to swim to the land with the help of the Search and Rescue (SAR) team of the Gunungkidul Community Protection Unit that was on patrol.

The SAR team lamented the reckless action that potentially endangered their lives given the strong waves on the southern coast of Java, especially during the rainy season.

Besides, dangerous offshore flows of water or rip currents are often found on almost all beaches in Gunungkidul or along Yogyakarta’s southern coast.

“Such as on Drini Beach, Pulang Sawal Beach, Ngandong Beach, and Sangleh Beach,” said the Gunungkidul SAR team secretary, Surisdiyanto, on Friday.

In every holiday period, he added, officers constantly issued warnings to tourists on the beach, either through loudspeakers or noticeboards to not swim on the mentioned beaches.
