Earthquakes Struck Sulawesi for 6 Consecutive Days

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG recorded that the Island of Sulawesi has been relentlessly hit by earthquakes non-stop for six days, since 21 October 2020. The locations moved daily, but the quakes mostly happened in East Luwu, South Sulawesi, with a depth as shallow as 2 kilometers underground.

The biggest earthquake so far was on Monday afternoon. It struck Buol with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale.

Listed below are a series of land earthquakes that have occurred within a week in Sulawesi. For the record, the quakes were recorded by BMKG as having caused tremors that could be felt on the earth's surface.

October 21

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake at 7:00 West Indonesia Time. The epicenter was on land, 5 kilometers northwest of Tomado, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

October 22

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake at 18:08. The epicenter was on land, 21 kilometers northeast of East Luwu, South Sulawesi with a depth of 10 kilometers

October 23 

Two earthquakes were recorded. The first one was 2.8 M at 18:38. The epicenter was on land, 20 kilometers northeast of East Luwu, South Sulawesi. The depth was 10 kilometers.

The second one was a 4.3-magnitude quake at 21:18. The epicenter was on land, 15 kilometer south of Tomata, North Morowali, Central Sulawesi Tengah, with a depth of 10 kilometers. 

October 24

A 3.3-magnitude earthquake at 14:23. The epicenter was on land, 22 kilometers northeast of East Luwu, South Sulawesi, with a depth of 2 kilometers.

October 25

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake at 21:25. The epicenter was on land, 19 kilometers north of Palu, Central Sulawesi. The depth was 10 kilometers.

October 26  

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake at 15:26. The epicenter was on land, 44 kilometers southeast of Buol, Central Sulawesi, with a depth of 62 kilometers.
