Garuda Indonesia President Announces 700 Layoffs Due to Prolonged Pandemic

27 October 2020 12:24 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia President Director, Irfan Setiaputra on Tuesday announced that the firm will layoff 700 employees on November 1, 2020, which he said is a direct effect of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This policy is the most difficult we had to take after numerous attempts to survive and ensure the company’s continuity amidst the challenge posed by the pandemic,” said Irfan to Tempo on Tuesday, October 27.

Irfan elaborated that the decision was made amidst a situation that is full of uncertainty which has exceeded the firm’s prediction for Garuda Indonesia’s long term business. He also said flight demands had drastically dropped during the pandemic.

The employees facing unpaid leave as their contract will be terminated are those who were contracted since May 2020. The Garuda Indonesia president assures that the workers facing layoff will have their rights fulfilled by the company and expressed his gratitude for their work in the past.
