TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said the current COVID-19 vaccine would not be suitable for the elderly and children yet. The upcoming vaccination, he added, would be set for people aged between 18-59 years with a minimum condition of comorbidities.
“Vaccines that will be soon ready as those under the clinical trials in Indonesia are set for people aged 18-59 years old, and it is targeted for people with low comorbidities,” said Terawan in a webinar of the 59th Golkar Party Anniversary on Tuesday, October 30, 2020.
According to him, this provision was based on the phase-3 clinical trials that have been carried out for efficacy and safety reasons. The two principles are vital in the vaccination process, he added.
“We must not forget that the goal is for the benefit of the people. So we comply with it automatically,” the minister said.
However, Terawan claimed research and clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine would continue to develop, and there could be safe vaccines for the elderly, children, and comorbid patients. “Vaccinations are not just a ritual,” said the former lieutenant general.
Terawan said that COVID-19 vaccination was aimed to build herd immunity or create immunity in the patient's body. Therefore, he said, vaccination must abide by the rules under the clinical trials.
