TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands) environmental agency on Wednesday announced that it had collected at least 805 kilograms of crude oil waste scattered across the coastlines of Pramuka Island and Panggang Island.
“We have mobilized 20 officials from the department that are also assisted by the local neighborhood and national park officials to conduct the cleanup,” said Djoko Rianto Budi, Kepulauan Seribu’s head of the environmental agency on October 14.
According to the agency, most of the oil waste was collected from Pramuka Island. Djoko called for locals to file a report to officials in the future regarding similar incidents, which it’s cause until now remains a mystery.
The local administration is currently continuing its investigation to unravel the source of the oil waste that first spread to the southern coastline of Pari Island in the Kepulauan Seribu in August this year.
Officials are finding out whether it is linked to thePertamina Hulu Energi Offshore Southeast Sumatra (PHE OSES). However, the state-owned energy firm claims that it has not received any reports regarding an oil pipe leak from its facility.
“The source of the oil spill is still unknown. We are currently researching this with Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE),” said the head of economic and development Endro on August 11, 2020.
