MRT Jakarta Closes 7 Stations as PA 212 Stages Protest

13 October 2020 15:21 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPT Mass Rapid Transit or MRT Jakarta closed its six underground stations and one elevated station following the rally staged by the 212 Alumni Brotherhood (PA 212) today, October 13, 2020. The Corporate Secretary Division Head Muhammad Kamaluddin said the closure would begin at 1 p.m.

“Stations that are closed include ASEAN Station until Bundaran HI Station,” said Kamaluddin in a written statement on Tuesday, October 12, 2020.

He said the train would only serve commuters from Lebak Bulus Grab Station until Blok M BCA Station. The closure, he added, was aimed at providing safety, security, and convenience to Ratangga passengers.

He ensured the train schedule would not be changed. "The departure schedule and the headway at stations remain operating normally in those stations," Kamaluddin added.

Today, PA 212 held a demonstration against the new Omnibus Law on Job Creation dubbed the 1310 Act. The PA 212 spokesman Novel Bamukmin claimed around 10,000 people would join the protest.

According to Bamukmin, the joint rally initiated by PA 212 and anti-communist groups would kick off at 1 p.m., and the gathering point would be at Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue. They planned to voice their demands in front of the State Palace.

During the anti-omnibus law demonstration which ended in chaos on Thursday, October 8, several facilities of MRT Jakarta were destroyed. Kamaluddin reported the glass entrance of Bundaran HI Station and Setiabudi Astra Station was broken. However, the train service operated normally in the next morning.
