TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) announced that it uncovered numerous COVID-19 health protocol violations in the 2020 regional head election (Pilkada) campaign season from September 28 - September 30 across 35 regencies and cities.
“Campaign teams have not been able to ensure correct health protocols during the activities,” said Bawaslu member Mochammad Afifuddin in a Pilkada-themed webinar on October 1.
In total, Bawaslu’s records found that there were 582 campaigns held in 187 regencies and cities with face-to-face campaigns dominating with 250 activities (43 percent) throughout the 3-day evaluation, even though the Bawaslu had warned this method presents a high-risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.
That electoral campaign method was followed by other methods such as distributing campaign materials in 128 locations, campaign material installations in 99 locations, 64 social media campaigns, and 11 percent online campaigns.
“Nearly half are using the face-to-face electoral campaign method,” said Afifuddin.
