ICW Urges KPK to Use Financial Report as Evidence

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia Corruption Watch urged the state anti-graft body to investigate dozens of lawmakers accused of receiving bribes in the process to select the deputy governor of Bank Indonesia in 2004.The statement came after the anti-graft body refused to proceed on the case using data from the Indonesia Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center. Ibrahim Badoh from corruption watchdog said the names on the travellers cheque reported by the financial report center were clear enough to be used as evidence in the investigation. The financial report center reported it has found 480 traveller's cheques which were distributed to more than 40 legislators. But chairman of the anti-graft body Antasari Azhar told Tempo on Tuesday that the law on the financial center prohibited the financial report to be used as evidence in legal cases.The case emerged last month after one legislator from Indonesia Democratic PArty of Struggle, Agus Condro admitted of receiveing ten traveller's cheques worth Rp 500 million in total, adding that his fellow lawmakers also received the cheques.At least 41 lawmaker who were at the banking and financial commission at the house of representatives were supected of receiving the cheques to affect the selection process of Bank Indonesia's deputy governor in 2004.
