TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Thousand Islands Police's Mask Patrol operation ended with the discovery of five dead bodies inside the freezer of a fishing boat. Five boat crew were found dead inside the freezer of KM Starindo Jaya Maju IV yesterday noon, September 17.
The Thousand Islands Resort Police chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Morry Ermond, said the officers were patrolling a number of fishing vessels to see if the crew onboard wore masks properly. The police were also handing out free masks to fishermen.
Suspicion arose when the officers looked at the passenger manifest at KM Starindo Jaya Maju IV. The number listed did not match the number of masks that the police handed out to the crew.
"Then the captain and the rest of the crew member said that five people had died, and their bodies were stored in the freezer," Morry told Tempo, Friday, September 18.
When the police stopped the boat at Pari Island, the Starindo Jaya Maju IV was on its way back ashore after having been sailing for two months, Morry said.
The dead bodies were then taken to the Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta for autopsy. The captain and other crew members are still being questioned by authorities.
This was not the first time that crew members' dead bodies are found in fishing boats. On July 8, a boat crew named Hasan Afriadi was found inside the cold storage of a Chinese fishing boat. He had been dead since June 20, 2020.
The Thousand Islands Police are not revealing the cause of the deaths yet. Morry said he will wait for the post mortem report.
