TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU) said that 60 regional head candidates tested positive for Covid-19. KPU chairman Arief Budiman said that they were confirmed to have the virus after taking swab tests.
"[The candidates who tested positive] are from 21 provinces. This is based on the reports that we received from all 32 provinces," Arief said in a meeting with the House of Representatives' Governments Commission, Thursday, September 10.
A few days earlier, Arief said that candidates who tested positive after they are registered will not be disqualified. However, there would be certain stages of the regional head elections that they cannot participate in.
"If they are infected, they have to be isolated or treated, and engage in campaigns and election stages," he said after meeting President Joko Widodo on Tuesday, September 8.
He added that the candidates infected with Covid-19 still have the same rights as other candidates. If by the voting day they are still treated or in isolation, the KPU will help them use their voting rights.
