Vespa Variants Help Sustain Piaggio Sales in Indonesia amid Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Piaggio Indonesia on Wednesday reports that it has seen a growth in sales after the COVID-19 transitional PSBB (large-scale social restriction) was enacted. The company claims the variants that helped boost the Italian brand’s sales are Vespa Sprint, Primavera, and Vespa S. 

“Performance-wise, our sales have nearly returned to normal. Even in July and August, the numbers are better than last year,” said PT Piaggio Indonesia Public Relations and Communications Manager, Robby Gozal, in South Jakarta on September 2. 

He later explains that the positive sales were achieved in January and February 2020 which exceeded the 2019 sales. PT Piaggio Indonesia oversees the sales and distribution of Italian brands such as Vespa, Piaggio, Motoguzzi, and Aprilia. 

“April up to May had a huge effect, but June continued to grow until August,” said Robby who did not disclose the details of its sales but noted that the market share percentage reached two digits. 

“Vespa Sprint and Primavera remain to be our backbone that contributes to more than 50 percent sales. Followed by [Vespa] S and LX with 35 percent. The rest is the GTS models,” said Robby who fears sales would once again slump if the government reintroduces a full-on PSBB.
