TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) Head of public policy, Sutrisno Iwantono, on Wednesday encouraged the government to depend less on foreign investors to help boost Indonesia’s economy as he argues the coronavirus pandemic forced countries to shift its focus.
“In the global scheme, international businesses are still [carefully observing]. It’s difficult to expect them to come to Indonesia as they are also concentrating on themselves,” said Sutrisno in a virtual discussion on September 2.
During the discussion, he elaborated several reasons why Indonesia is not in a situation as the European countries are undergoing, as its tight-knit nature could create a domino effect once a problem with significance emerges in one neighboring country.
“Indonesia is not linked like that yet. Moreover, domestic investors can be the savior ‘card’ which is why local investments must not be forgotten about,” said the Apindo member.
The domestic investment realization in this year’s first semester logged Rp469.1 trillion and Rp348.1 trillion - according to the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) - which is larger than foreign investments.
