TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Monday, August 31, said that the new cases in the capital city have experienced a spike but defends that current active cases have actually experienced a drop within the past week.
“Alhamdulillah (Praise to God), the number of active cases has dropped significantly which means the number of people being treated or isolated has dropped significantly,” said Anies Baswedan in Monday’s virtual discussion.
Baswedan explained that the number of active cases is achieved by subtracting positive cases with recoveries and the total death toll. Citing Jakarta’s official COVID-19 tracker, corona.jakarta.go.id, the number of cases in Jakarta amount to 7,960 cases with more than half as hospital inpatients.
Moreover, the governor defends that Jakarta’s case-fatality rate is considered low at 3.0 percent, which he said is below the global fatality rate of 4.3 percent with a national death toll of 3.4 percent. Jakarta has recorded a total of 1,186 COVID-19 cases and 30,134.
The former minister of education claims that Jakarta’s positive cases are a consequence of the heightened testings that Anies Baswedan claim reaches 40,000-50,000 tests, which is four times the World Health Organization (WHO) standard.
