TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The annual international marathon dubbed the Borobudur Marathon is set to hold its 2020 event dubbed the 'Borobudur Marathon 2020' despite the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The event is planned to be officially launched on September 8, 2020.
Head of the Central Java Tourism and Youth Sports Agency, Sinung Nugroho Rachmadi, said that this year’s Borobudur Marathon will be a contrast to previous events as organizers plan to impose strict health restrictions.
“There will be preconditions and simulations [before the event],” said Rachmadi in Magelang, Central Java on Sunday.
Based on initials talks with stakeholders, he noted that the international marathon may well be held in two ways, actual and virtual marathon. Organizers have concluded that COVID-19 will limit the number of runners to just 30 professional and local athletes and plans to let more runners participate in the event virtually.
This plan has been presented to the Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo on Monday, August 31.
Sinung Nugroho Rachmadi explains that the Borobudur Marathon current simulations aim to provide an extensive picture of how the actual marathon would be held, with the help of 30 runners from each region the marathon route passes.
