TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta's Legislative Council Commission B Chairman, Abdul Aziz, asked Governor Anies Baswedan to halt his plan for reopening the cinemas. He said that Jakarta should wait until the infection rate of Covid-19 declines.
"Not now. [Wait] a month or two after new cases and infection rates decline," Aziz said on Thursday, August 27.
Aziz said that the Covid-19 situation in Jakarta is still worrisome as the number of new daily cases is always high. Reopening movie theaters means risking more infections.
He added that while the reopening would come with strict health protocols, there are still worries about public discipline. According to Aziz, Jakarta residents' obedience level is still low, as evidenced by the high number of people fined for not wearing masks and physical distancing.
The Jakarta administration is preparing a rule on movie theaters during the pandemic, with Governor Anies Baswedan saying that cinemas will re-open soon. The decision was taken after the government had a discussion with the Covid-19 Task Force about the required protocols and regulations.
