Independence Day; Diver Community to Display National Flag Under the Sea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The divers joint at the Maumere Diver Community (MDC) in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), will display the Red and White national flag (Bendera Merah Putih) under the sea in the commemoration of 75th anniversary of Indonesian Independence Day on Monday, August 17.
The acting chief of the event Rikardus Fransiskus Lado said they would raise the flag right on the plate where the tsunami of 1992 occurred, near to Babi Island, Sikka.
"The location for raising Bendera Merah Putih is a historical place for all Indonesians in Sikka, that's why we chose this location," he said Saturday, August 15.
Eighteen divers will display one giant flag measuring 10 meters as the main flag and several flags measuring 3 meters.
The 18 divers are from the MDC and other institutions in the regency.
"From 18 people, only ten people who will dive to the seabed to raise the flag, the other eight will only do snorkeling," said Rikardus.
Management of the event claimed they will follow COVID-19 protocol and said that it will be broadcasted for the general public.
The displaying of Bendera Merah Putih under the sea is also part of promoting sea tourism in the regency.
