Anies Says Jakarta's Economy Will Recover Quickly, Expert: Not Necessarily

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Economist Bhima Yudistira from the Institute for Development of Economics (Indef) estimated it was still unsure if Jakarta’s economy would recover quickly.
He explained the economy of the capital, which serves as the country’s hub of finance and business, was impacted by the global condition that was presently inching closer to recession.
“It is still uncertain if Jakarta’s economy will recover quickly. Those that are showing good signs right now are Indonesia’s eastern parts,” he said on Friday, August 7, 2020.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan earlier said the capital’s economy would decline further compared to the nation’s in the second quarter this year. According to the latest data of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia’s economy in the second quarter slipped by 5.32 percent from last year, while Jakarta saw a decline of 8.22 percent.
“It has been estimated since the onset that Jakarta’s economy would drop further than the nation’s amid the crisis,” Anies posted on his Instagram account @aniesbaswedan on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.
“But it is also predicted that once the pandemic is under control, Jakarta’s economy will be among the first to rebound, Insha Allah [God willing]," Anies Baswedan said.
