TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lukmanul Hakim, chairman of the National Mandate Party Faction or PAN, urged Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to provide free internet access, especially for school children living in slum neighborhoods. He said that not every parent in Jakarta can afford internet services to facilitate remote learning.
"This should be considered by the Jakarta Provincial Government, free wifi for poor people, for their children to study," he said in his written statement, Monday, August 3.
He asked Anies to collaborate with internet service providers for the free wifi service.
Lukmanul said there are still many slums in the capital. For people living in slums, their economies are already affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and yet they still need to buy internet packages for their children's studies.
"This is a new problem. People are facing financial difficulties and yet there is a demand for online learning, and so they must buy [internet data] packages every day," he said.
Since March this year, Anies Baswedan implemented a learn-from-home scheme to reduce risks of COVID-19 transmission among children. The policy is still implemented.
