Rejecting Nadiem Makarim's Program; NU Set to Finance Its Own Education Program

30 July 2020 12:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU) Ma'arif Institute was determined to not re-join the program dubbed the Mobilization Organization Program (POP) initiated by Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim.

The institute chairman Arifin Junaidi said his agency had implemented such a program long before the ministry’s program was established.

“So with or without the ministry’s POP, we still run our POP,” said Arifin to Tempo on Thursday, July 30.

He said the institute would implement such a teacher training grant program as it has been carried out thus far, asserting that it would finance itself. “No need to include us in the list of the beneficiary of the ministry’s POP,” Arifin added.

As previously reported, the two Indonesian largest Islamic organizations Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah and the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) withdrew from the ministry’s program due to several reasons.

Minister Nadiem Makarim then issued an apology and asked the three organizations to participate in the program again. NU, Muhammadiyah, and PGRI, he said, are the government’s strategic partners that made huge contributions in national education.
