Eid al-Adha; MUI Asks Muslims in COVID-19 High-risk Zones to Pray at Home

29 July 2020 06:47 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Secretary of the Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) Edict Commission, Asrorun Ni’am Sholeh, called on Muslims to keep complying with the predetermined health protocols in celebrating and performing prayers of Eid al-Adha, the Islamic feast of sacrifice.

“Avoid crowds as it has the potential of virus transmission, let alone if the people are not disciplined in wearing face masks and maintaining physical distance because it may cause issues on health and safety,” said Asrorun via a press conference on Wednesday, July 29.

MUI demanded the public adjust to the factual condition in their respective regions upon holding mass Eid prayers. People, Asrorun added, must acknowledge the potential risk of COVID-19 transmission in their areas.

“A region that has managed to control [virus infections] is permitted to hold a mass prayer at mosques,” Asrorun remarked.

However, regions that are categorized at a high risk of novel coronavirus transmission are appealed to perform the prayer at their homes.

Additionally, Muslims must ensure their good health condition before joining mass Eid al-Adha prayer beforehand. “If they feel sick or have previous medical issues, they are better to perform prayer at homes,” Asrorun underlined.
