TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) on Thursday presented the records on the COVID-19 death toll among children and revealed that 70 percent of the coronavirus infection-related deaths happened to those under 6 years old.
In total, there are 2,712 children that were infected by COVID-19 with 51 of them eventually succumbing to the virus from March 17 up to July 20.
“This is based on the COVID-19 records among children that were collected up to July 20,” said IDAI chairperson Aman Bhakti Pulungan on Thursday, July 23.
Seventy percent of the deaths comprise 0-28-day-old children (12 percent), 29-days-old to 11-month-old and 29-day-old children (33 percent), and one-year-old up to five-year-old children (25 percent). The other 30 percent comprises groups from six to 18 years of age.
Meanwhile, suspected cases among children amounted to 7,633 with 290 deaths. Aman said that Indonesia’s mortality rate among children is higher than in a number of countries such as India, Myanmar, and Pakistan.
