Prabowo Confirms Gerindra - PDIP Joint Effort in Pilkada 2020

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gerindra Party chairperson Prabowo Subianto on Monday confirmed that his party has worked together with their political foe, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), in the simultaneous 2020 regional head elections (Pilkada 2020). 

Prabowo explained that the cordiality between the two is due to the shared affinity the regional-level party officials have with each other. 

“I hand it completely over to regional committees in terms of democracy at that level. Regional head elections in regencies and cities are decided by branch-heads. They decide who gets support,” said Prabowo Subianto at his house on Monday. 

Despite this, he said that Gerindra remains open for a broader partnership with other parties. “Maybe PDIP has the most [partnerships with us] but our doors are open for all.”

The stand taken by Gerindra was also confirmed by the party’s deputy chairman Dasco Ahmad who did not deny that the cooperation is a means to prepare for the 2024 presidential election.
