Anies Baswedan: 66% of New COVID-19 Cases Are Asymptomatic

17 July 2020 09:17 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Governor Anies Baswedan confirmed that 66 percent of new COVID-19 infections in the city during the transitional PSBB or large-scale social restriction were asymptomatic.

"66 percent of new cases in Jakarta in the last week are those who neither develop symptoms nor complaints,” said Anies in a video recording published by Jakarta administration on Thursday, July 16.

Thus, Anies demanded all residents maintain discipline in applying health measures in any place, any condition. “Keep reminding each other, remind people who do not abide by the health protocols,” he said.

The governor also urged Jakartans to keep the spirit in passing the transitional period from the social restriction to a new normal era that was extended for two weeks beginning July 17, 2020.

“We may be tired and bored, but the problem is, we are dealing with such a virus that never gets tired. So we must keep up the spirit, encourage and take care of each other during the transitional PSBB,” Anies underlined.

“Remember, follow the advice of health experts, they fully comprehend [the situation] and talk for the sake of our safety,” he added.

Anies Baswedan admitted that it was risky to loosen the first phase of the transitional PSBB given 66 percent of new COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic ones. “So we decided to prolong the first phase for the next two weeks.”
