Bio Farma to Boost PCR Test Kits Production

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned pharmaceutical holding firm PT Bio Farma announced on Thursday, July 16, 2020, that it will increase the production of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) equipment in the near future. 

Bio Farma president director Honesti Basyir explained that the firm currently has a production capacity of up to 240,000 units monthly and was able to produce roughly 140,000 PCR test equipment. 

"The production capacity has been raised to 1.5 million units and eventually to 2 million units by September 2020," said Honesti in a remote press conference on Thursday, July 16, 2020. 

PCR test equipment production is a collaborative effort with the Task Force for Research and Technological Innovation for Covid-19 (TFRIC19) backed by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT). 

100,000 PCR test equipment - which claims to have passed the golden standard in COVID-19 inspections -  have been donated to 45 laboratories across the nation up to July 2020, labs that are exclusively recommended by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
