TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The former Indonesian Minister of Environmental Affairs, Emil Salim, argued that the job creation omnibus draft bill or known locally as the RUU Cipta Kerja only focuses on creating more job opportunities by exploiting the country's natural resources.
"There are no aspects overseeing the management of the country's natural resources' ecosystem," said Emil in a discussion on Thursday, July 16, 2020.
According to the senior politician, the draft bill has not mentioned the long term effects that may arise from the massive land areas that would be made available to make new job opportunities.
"From what I understand is that the job creation bill is only prepared as a short term solution and was not based on longer-term commitments corroborating with the ecosystem," said Emil.
Emil Salim named Kalimantan and Papua as two Indonesian regions that have the potential to become agricultural or farming hubs of the nation but are being forcefully projected to be the opposite.
He also noted the issue regarding mineral and coal mining and its consequences towards Indonesia’s natural resources that could possibly emerge due to the draft bill.
