TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia recorded an all-time daily high of more than 1,800 new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday. The surge in new cases comes as the nation gradually reopens the economy, allowing several non-essential sectors—including entertainment—to resume operations.
According to the national Covid-19 Task Force spokesman, Achmad Yurianto, as per July 8, there were 1,853 new confirmed cases, the highest ever recorded.
"This brings the total number of positive cases to 68,079," Yurianto said.
Meanwhile, the number of recoveries now reached 31,585, and the number of Covid-19 related deaths is up to 3,359.
The capital city, Jakarta, also recorded an all-time high of daily infections with 344 new confirmed cases—more than twice the average 150-200 new cases per day. Of these, 51 are Indonesian nationals who had just returned from abroad.
To date, Indonesia has tested more than 968,000 specimens.
