Grab to Take Legal Steps Against KPPU's Recent Verdict

3 July 2020 13:36 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPT Solusi Transportasi Indonesia, known as Grab Indonesia, together with PT Teknologi Pengangkutan Indonesia (TPI) will take legal steps following the verdict issued by the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) which found the two business entities guilty of discriminating its business partners or drivers.

Renowned lawyer Hotman Paris said in a written statement on Friday: “We will file an objection to the district court within the time period within law and regulation.”

The KPPU panel of judges deemed Grab and TPI of violating Article 14 and Article 19 (d) of Law No.5/1999.

Hotman Paris argues that the KPPU verdict could be a bad precedent as in a previous court session, one of Grab’s cooperative partners that is a competitor of TPI had stated that there had been no discrimination.

He also thinks that the large fines handed to both business entities are not taking into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic situation and that they have also been financially affected by the global crisis.

Investors could also be drawn away due to the KPPU verdict, said Hotman Paris, as it contradicts the actual condition on the ground. Hotman also called for President Jokowi to evaluate the performance of KPPU.
