  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy on Thursday said that the government is currently pushing to accelerate the production of COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test kits by PT Bio Farma.

“We will later reduce the import of PCRs,” said Muhadjir in Thursday’s written statement on Thursday, July 2.

In order to fulfill the domestic need for PCR kits, the Indonesian needs to have at least one million kits said Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto previously. Based on a meeting between Terawan and Bio Farma president-director Honesti Basyir, the current production capacity is able to produce 50,000 each week or 200,000 each month.

The government has also handed over a laboratory that once studied and researched bird flu vaccines in Indonesia. According to Honesti, Bio Farma is concocting a plan to use the facility so that it could be transformed to a production facility for the production of PCR kits.

The government is eyeing to meet its one million PCR kits deadline that will fall in August this year, which is much more affordable and compatible with the Indonesian market.
