TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Jakarta’s transportation agency Syafrin Liputo confirmed that the city’s weekly ‘car free day’ event, or CFD - that was just reintroduced last Sunday following COVID-19 quarantine - will not be held again in the upcoming Sunday on June 28.
The city administration has decided to temporarily close the event due to fears of it becoming a new cluster for the spread of coronavirus.
“That is correct, it is temporarily halted,” said Syafrin in a Text message to Tempo on Wednesday.
The car free day was held again last Sunday of June 21, 2020, which saw the controlled area - where motorized vehicles are barred from entry - be packed with a large crowd of people eager to make use of the moment to exercise at the heart of downtown Jakarta.
However, the packed crowd made it nearly impossible to maintain physical distance to avoid further transmitting COVID-19, there were even two people that underwent rapid tests with reactive results.
This crowd boom at Sunday’s car free day (CFD) also garnered huge reactions from the internet with some also satirizing the event to ‘corona-free day.’
