TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police traffic director, Grand Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo on Thursday said that police have reasons to ticket cyclists that travel outside of intended bike lanes.
Police argue that it is deemed necessary to do so as doing so would not only endanger the cyclists, but also other road users.
“Upon a three-day observation, there were many cyclists that do not use the bike lane and would rather travel in the middle lane, overtake in between vehicles, and this is extremely dangerous. An accident could occur,” said Sambodo in Sudirman, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, June 18.
He asserts that cyclists involved in road accidents that occur outside of bike lanes can be held accountable and could be handed prison sentences. However, he assured that if such a situation happens in bike lanes, the guilty party would be the motorists.
“I truly hope this grabs the attention of cyclists and bicycle communities. Make sure that cyclists use bike lanes that we have prepared,” said Sambodo Purnomo.
