Anti-corruption Watchdog Blasts Nazaruddin's Remission

18 June 2020 12:21 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) on Wednesday demanded the Law and Human Rights Ministry annul the remission of graft inmate Muhammad Nazaruddin as the anti-graft watchdog argues Nazaruddin had never obtained the status as a justice collaborator (JC).

“According to the KPK (corruption eradication commission), Nazaruddin himself never wore the status as a JC,” said ICW researcher Kurnia Ramadhana in a statement on Wednesday.

He argues that it would go against Article 34A of Government Regulation No.99/2012 that asserts corruption convicts could only receive amnesty if they agree to expose the case they are involved in as a justice collaborator.

The remission Nazaruddin received, said the ICW researcher, only strengthens the indication that the Law and Human Rights Ministry is not backing the efforts to eradicate corruption. Nazaruddin was initially handed a jail sentence that would see his release in 2025 or 13-years imprisonment.

“In the future, corruption suspects will not be deterred,” said Kurnia Ramadhana.

Through this, the ICW formally demands the Ministry and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to annul the remission for Muhammad Nazaruddin, who initially received a sentence for his involvement in the major corruption case, Wisma Atlet Hambalang back in 2012.
