Anies Baswedan Puts Safety First, Delays School Reintroduction

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Tuesday asserts that city administrators do not plan to open schools within its district until it is completely declared safe from COVID-19 infection.
“It is currently unsafe for our children. Which is why we are not planning to introduce school activities [in the near future],” said Anies Baswedan in a recording sent by the city’s public relation office today, June 16.
The governor said that students in Jakarta will continue to study remotely from home as he will evaluate the situation until July.

“We’ll see what the situation will be after July ends,” said Anies.
He called for the public to trust the government’s decision to delay opening schools as he said the safety of the city’s residents lies on the administration’s policies. “Our number one priority is safety,” he said.
Previously, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry Nadiem Makarim said that schools located in green zones with the least amount of COVID-19 infections are permitted to reintroduce school activities and marking the 2020/2021 school year in July.
However, Nadiem asserts that “Primary school students are not allowed to conduct direct school activities.”
