TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) expressed its fear that the 2020 regional head election (Pilkada) amid the Covid-19 pandemic will foster the practice of money politics.
It opined that the potential of money politics will likely be under a disguise of social assistance.
Previously, the Election General Commission (KPU) decided to hold the 2020 simultaneous regional head election on December 9, 2020.
“Money politics will hide behind the Covid-19 program, there are many examples of that,” said the KPK’s Director for network development and inter-commission and institution cooperation, Wijanarko, in a discussion via KPK’s Youtube channel today, June 16.

He explained that the form of money politics could exist behind social aid. “Unfortunately, the assistance may be given in cash. So this will be very dangerous,” he remarked.
According to Wijanarko, money politics is one of the threats that may emerge if the government forces to hold the election amid the pandemic. The anti-graft body also assessed other losses, such as the low participation rate up to the emergence of a new Covid-19 cluster.
KPK then suggested the government consider the establishment of the 2020 Regional Head Election during a pandemic and Jokowi or KPU pass a regulation that postpones the event.
