TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Surakarta City mayor candidate and President Jokowi’s son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, openly announced that he had stopped his political activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. His absence from political activities is also followed by his volunteers that no longer conduct political lobbies for Gibran’s political campaign.
The PDIP-endorsed politician is currently faced with fellow PDIP senior Achmad Purnomo as an opponent in the mayor candidacy.
Gibran, on Wednesday, claims that he has redirected his efforts to humanitarian activities upon preventing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic that has also hit areas in Surakarta.
“My team and I intend to help lighten the burden carried by locals who are deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Gibran to Tempo on Wednesday.
The aforementioned humanitarian activities were well documented in Gibran’s Instagram account, which saw him and his team distributing staple foodstuff to locals of Mertoudan in Surakarta.
One of Gibran Rakabuming’s volunteer, Bagus Andrian John, stated that the candidate’s political activities had officially been suspended since the Surakarta City administration deemed the COVID-19 pandemic an extraordinary event (KLB).
“Mas Gibran instructed all of his volunteers to assist those who are affected, especially the marginalized groups,” said Bagus.
