TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced a drought warning in Indonesia’s regions during the dry season.
“[We ask for] cooperation with regional disaster mitigation agencies or BPBD to carry out preventive measures in facing drought and smog due to land and forest fires,” said the BNPB’s Deputy of Disaster Prevention, Lilik Kurniawan, in a written statement on Tuesday, June 2.
Lilik also urged regional administrations to take preparations in dealing with the dry season that has come from May and will peak in August.
The strengthening measures include preparing logistics and equipment such as clean water tanks, providing water pumps in each sub-district, and prioritizing it for affected regions.
Local governments, she added, could conduct a water-saving campaign by harvesting rainwater and wastewater reuse, as well as multi-stakeholder coordination to prepare an alternative policy on fulfilling the public’s water needs through boreholes drilling and water distribution management.
BNPB has identified areas prone to drought during the peak of the dry season in August. Referred to the rainfall intensity at below 100 mm/day that based on the disaster-prone area index (IRBI), a total of 189 regions in 15 provinces are on a moderate to high-risk level to experience water scarcity: 162 regencies or cities are on a high-risk level and the rest regions are on moderate risk level.
