Kominfo Announces Internet Usage Soared amidst Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) on Thursday announced that the internet usage grew exponentially by 40 percent amidst the COVID-19 pandemic social restrictions. The internet traffic which used to be dominated by office areas is now increasing in residential areas.
“The data Kominfo obtained during the pandemic shows an increase in internet access usage and the use of information technology to support people’s daily activities. We also predict it will continue to grow as we enter the new normal post-COVID-19,” said the ministry’s director-general of informatics application Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan on Thursday, May 28.
In the press release, Semuel said that internet uses will hopefully help SMEs to survive the numerous pandemic restrictions. He noted that public trust toward digital platforms must be maintained and improved upon.
Kominfo also assured that it has improved the security of digital platforms. This includes digital wallets, such as one of the country’s prominent players in the industry GoPay.
The company’s VP on governance, risk and compliance, Genesha Saputra said that the firm has introduced Gojek SHIELD to ensure the security of its users which include consumers, merchants, and partners.
