TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Security Minister Mahfud MD said the new normal policy on how to “peacefully co-exist” with the COVID-19 pandemic was still a plan, as opposed to an official decision.
“There is a plan, but not a decision yet on the new normal [policy],” Mahfud said in his opening speech at a gathering event broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Sebelas Maret State University, Tuesday, May 26, 2020.
Mahfud said the government, along with experts, was still reviewing the planned policy at the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) office and the Presidential Staff office.
“Everything is calculated. The R0 in Jakarta is presently 0.9, but there are other regions with soaring R0, like Gorontalo and East Java.”
Mahfud said the government was still figuring out a way on how the people could live normally amid the COVID-19 pandemic, adding it was not a problem if the planned new normal policy drew varied responses from society.
“What is the best? Let us discuss it. There is no decision yet on that matter, everything is still a plan and controversies remain. But we have to face it,” Mahfud said.
