TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An epidemiologist from the University of Indonesia, Syahrizal Syarif, has appealed to the Jakarta administration to extend its large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) after the end of the third phase of PSBB in the capital, which was slated for June 4, 2020, or after Eid holidays this year.
Syahrizal suggested the Jakarta administration extend the PSBB by one or two phases.
He opined the government could not yet terminate the PSBB in Jakarta as the peak of coronavirus transmission was predicted to occur five to six days after Eid holidays this year.
He added many residents in Jakarta had still been overlooking and failed to abide by the PSBB before and after Eid holidays.
“If the PSBB is relaxed in the near future, it will be tough for us. [It could lead to] another PSBB or four to five phases,” he said via text message on Sunday, May 24, 2020. “But it is all up to the government.”
He also called on Jakarta residents to wear masks and observe social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic—particularly on the capital’s youngsters, who could potentially become OTG (asymptomatic carriers) of the coronavirus.
