  • TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo called on the public not to worry excessively about the Covid-19 pandemic that is storming Indonesia. He asserted that all elements must rise together in dealing with this situation.

“In these difficult days, we must not be pessimistic, we must not be discouraged. We all must work together,” said the President during a national and humanitarian prayer event held by the Ministry of Religious Affairs via a teleconference today, May 14.

He elaborated that the efforts could be in the form of protecting ourselves, families, relatives, and communities from the spread of the new coronavirus, such as by maintaining hygiene, wearing face masks, and refraining from going mudik.

The president further appealed to the public to dispel anxiety, keep themselves from excessive fear, be optimistic, and develop empathy and social solidarity.

“Let us face this problem calmly and patiently. Being panic is a halfway to disease, calm is part of the cure, and patience is a starting point for healing,” he remarked.

Jokowi went on to say that prayers must be in line with efforts. Thus he hoped that Indonesia and the world will soon be free from the Covid-19 pandemic and any disaster.

"Let us bow our heads, asking God, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful, for patience with this disaster and strength so we can survive and pass the test given by Allah," he said.
