TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google together with the Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry established a partnership with internet service providers such as Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo, XL Axiata, Tri, and Smartfren, to provide free 90-days internet data for 10,000 teachers in Indonesia.
The lucky teachers will be provided with up to 30GB of internet data that is distributed by REFO and Guru Berbagi, both are platforms that share learning materials for remote schooling.
Teachers must register themselves via Guru Berbagi website by sending a reflective essay with a maximum of 1,000 words on their experience teaching from home and how it affects their students.
Guru Berbagi will then select the winners and automatically add the internet data to the cell phone numbers submitted by the teachers that can be used for 90-days after it is sent.
The program is aimed to help reduce the costs of online teaching that has been being implemented since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic broke more than a month ago.
The Ministry’s director-general of teachers and educational personnel, Iwan Syahril, said that the campaign with the online portal Guru Berbagi is a positive initiative between the government and the private sector.
“Hopefully, the initiative can motivate teachers to conduct meaningful activities with their students during the ‘study from home’ period,” said Iwan in a written statement on Wednesday, May 13.
Danny Ardianto, a representative of the joint government and Google team, hopes that the teachers lucky enough to be awarded will be able to help them conduct homeschooling amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Google conveyed their appreciation to Indonesian teachers and also sympathized with their struggles,” said Danny.
