Pandemic, Mass Eid Prayers Likely to Be Canceled

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The national COVID-19 task force on Tuesday, May 12, addressed the issue many Indonesian Muslims are eager to know which involves the mass Eid prayers that normally take place as the Ramadan month ends in the years prior to the pandemic.
The task force head, Doni Monardo, said that the mass Eid al-Fitr prayer is likely to be canceled this year as the coronavirus is still largely detected in numerous regions.
According to him, this was agreed in the meeting with President Jokowi and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin on the evaluation of the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) today.
"The mass Eid prayers will not be conducted when threats on the danger of COVID-19 still exist,” Doni said. He reiterated Ma’ruf Amin’s comment in the meeting that reminded the decision will heavily depend on the latest situation in the field.
The VP, who is a former MUI leader, said that a large congregation of people praying together in numerous locations could only be possible if dangers and threats of COVID-19 transmissions are eliminated.
Previously, Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi, among many others, requested several Mosques to be opened to the public while continuing to abide by the pandemic health protocols.
