TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The inactive regent of Muara Enim, Ahmad Yani, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for his involvement in the bribery for various projects in the regency. He also must pay a fine of Rp200 million, or spend 6 more months in jail.
Ahmad Yani is also ordered to pay Rp2.1 billion, substitutable with 8 more months of confinement.
The sentence is lighter than what the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor demanded for Ahmad Yani, which was 7 years in prison.
The Palembang Corruption Court judges' said Ahmad Yani was found guilty of receiving a bribe of Rp3 billion from businessman Robi Okta Fahlevi.
Robi bribed Ahmad Yani so that his company would get 16 projects in Muara Enim Regency worth Rp130 billion. Robi was sentenced to 3 years in prison for his crime.
The judges said that as a regional head, Ahmad Yani had failed to maintain the trust of the residents of Muara Enim.
KPK prosecutors and Ahmad Yani said they will deliberate before accepting the sentences.
KPK investigators have named two new suspects in this case: Muara Enim DPRD speaker Aries H.B. and acting chief of Muara Enim's Public Works and Public Housing Agency, Ramlan Suryadi. Both have been detained by the KPK since April 27.
